SWEDISH MASSAGE THERAPY

"Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones.
The therapist moves the strokes in the same direction as the flow of blood, returning it to the heart. Swedish massage was developed in the 1700's by a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling.

Benefits of Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is relaxing and yet can be invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, it removes toxins from the soft tissues which can be flushed out of the body.
Its good for recovery of injury and overuse, it can de-stress and promotes health and well being.

Purpose of Swedish Massage
The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish Massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.
Swedish massage techniques include: long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage, and shaking motions.
Massage decreases stress level many of us find ourselves in a constant state of hyper-alertness as we try to respond to the stresses of day-to-day living.
Massage acts directly on the nervous system, it both relaxes and stretches painful and tight muscles. It gently separates individual fibers that may have become bound and knotted together. Once your muscles are relaxed you may find that you can move more freely, breathe more deeply, making it more likely for your muscles to remain in their new-found flexible state.
Massage improves joint mobility and health. It can help increase range of motion in your joints by releasing muscle tension around them. It stimulates the healthy production of the joint's natural lubrication.
Massage can help ease secondary pain
Massage can relieve secondary pain that builds up around a primary source of pain which can even sometimes last longer than the original cause. Headaches brought about by tense shoulder and neck muscles, pain and tingling that travels down your leg as a result of tight low back muscles or arthritis are just a few examples. Massage increases vitality, energy and alertness.

I have been having weekly massages from James at Holistic Touch for the last three months. Before the treatment I couldn’t sleep long because of a bad back and my neck was affected badly when cycling long distances.
Now I can sleep with no pain at all and I am not losing money to have days off work with bad backs. My cycle training is now on target and I look forward to thousands of miles in the saddle this year.

"Sports Therapy"

I attended Holistic Touch with what I thought were problems with my back,
however after an initial consultation with James we concluded that I had
problems with my shoulders. I attended weekly half an hour sessions and
gradually the pain and discomfort subsided, this allowed better performance
in my running and has generally made me more comfortable.

I now attend monthly sessions to keep on top of any stiffness which may be
developing, I would highly recommend any one with aches, pains or
discomfort to go to James for help. He is highly knowledgeable, friendly
and professional. I only wish I had went sooner!
